Competition: Private Processed Passions…

So my family of three is heading to Cairns next week for our yearly BIG holiday.  We are so looking forward to it.  Each year we try and go somewhere lovely and spend time sightseeing and spending quality time together.  Last year was New Zealand and next year will be Adelaide (I know – we are very organised!!!).  This year it’s Cairns and we are taking Hubby’s parents.  They are great people and Willem (my 6yo) loves spending time with them – so it’s all good.  And hopefully Hubby and I will get a night out on the town – kid free!!!!

Anyway…my Mother-In-Law (MIL) and I were discussing what we will eat whilst we are away.  We have a gorgeous self-catering apartment, so obviously what to eat is a BIG consideration.

BBQ’s are high on the agenda and picnic lunches.  As we chatted we compared ideas and agreed on most things. Then MIL says “Do you like macaroni and cheese?”  (I knew this was coming).  “Out of a packet?” I say.  “Yes, we love it”, she says.  I’m afraid I was a little frank in my disgust.  “No!” I said.  I was a little blunt I think.  Did I offend her…maybe.  Could I have pretended I loved it?  Absolutely not.  I mean, we are talking powdered cheese people!!!!

Anyway, this got Hubby and I talking about food we love and food we despise.  And I couldn’t help but wonder…What do you eat when no one is looking?

As a person who loves food, there is a certain amount of snobbery that goes with it.  Although I feel I am afflicted with a mild case of food snobbery, there are some foods which elicit quite a strong emotional response from me.  Packet Mac and Cheese would have to be one of them.

So what’s your Private Processed Passion?  What do you crave when the moments get tough or you just have to have a comfort food of your youth?  I guess I am talking about something that is overly processed and something you would quickly hide behind the fridge if your best foodie friend came visiting?

Shall I tell you mine?  This particular dish was something my mother could easily please me with during my childhood.  And I can tell you now – it has not lost its effect on me.  In fact, I am slowly convincing my son of its deliciousness (I have already done that with peanut butter and jam sandwiches – heaven!).

I love canned Spaghetti on toast – in the morning, at lunch, in the evening… I don’t care… whenever will do.  It has to be Heinz mind you.  I’ve tried other brands but Heinz is the only one that hits the mark flavour wise.

It’s a bit of a “go to” food for me.  When Hubby’s away with work, guess what comes out for my son and I.  Mmmm…delicious in its processy goodness.

So Bells and I thought we would have a Competition.  What is your Private Processed Passion?  Leave a comment with your confession and I’ll draw the comp after I return from Cairns.  Wonder if I convince the family that we should have spaghetti on toast for breakfast one morning….

See you soon.

Delly

I dream of dripping on toast, the end of the roast pan juices and dripping solidifies on top. The next day it is spread on toast with salt and pepper. I never have it.
I do have a bowl of tinned tomato soup with Worcestershire sauce liberally splashed in. It has to be made with half milk, half water. With toast and butter soldiers!!
I abhor the Parmesan cheese in a tube from the shelf, it’s like powdered cheese gone so very wrong!!
I think your holiday planning sounds perfectly fine!!

I would quite happily eat mac and cheese from a box and don’t mind admitting it! Not that I do very much (like, I’ve only had it about 5 times in my life, and each of those was when I was pregnant!) and when I do, I usually add stuff like tuna, peas and corn.

I also love really sugary kids cereal, like froot loops. Mmmmm froot loops. And I always have spagetti in the cupboard, and baked beans too. Can’t beat the musical fruit!

What a great topic! My favourite has to be Kraft cheese spread. That fakey creamy cheesy salty spread in a jar, on toast. Yum.

fish fingers. They’ll win every time. With mayo (good stuff though). Yesterday Sean had 2min noodles with tinned tuna mixed through it. I felt kind of ill but intrigued.

And I would eat peanut butter on white bread for dinner every night if I was on my own. Although I’m sure i’d get sick of it.

Boxed mac and cheese makes me think of salty glue. I couldn’t even begin to stomach it.

Mine is ramen noodles. There’s nothing approximating food
in it, it’s all salt and MSG, but nothing beats it when I feel
sick. Plus, it’s fast, easy, and takes only one bowl. The kind you
get from the asian markets are even better, but I’ll eat any of
    them.

A tin of butter beans, heated up, then toss in as many
crispy bacon bits as you can get away with…yum! This is my go-to
lunch or dinner whenever I don’t have time or energy to cook. Don’t
    hate me!

My guilty processed food secret came up in conversation at a breakfast with friends a few weeks ago, to their sheer horror and disgust. Like many people on here, it is Maccas. I like to get a medium fries and dip them, still hot, in a large chocolate sundae as I eat them. Have been doing it since I was about 6, and it is one of my earliest memories!

Totino’s frozen pizza. Even though I recognize it tastes like nothing in the natural world, I just love the stuff. But I’m with Delly on the powdered cheese AND I really, really, REALLY hate Velveeta (billed in the small lettering as “A processed cheese food”???) The boys love it though, so I have to give in and let them have their Velveeta Shells and Cheese…while I scarf down an entire frozen pizza. 😉

Chicken flavoured 2 minute noodles. It was Savings brand
when I was a poor uni student, but now when I succumb I get the
“fancy” Maggi packs. I like to mix an egg through it as well so
that it kind of scrambles. Easy peasy weekend lunch for
    one.

When I am feeling down and a little teary all I want is Pea and Ham Soup. Out of a can is just fine usually, Campbells. Dad has learned to like it over the years as he knows it makes me feel better.

    HASH BROWNS!

I will eat these for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I cheered on the KFC tower burger because it includes hash browns. I have made avocado and cheese sandwiches using hash browns as “bread”. I have used a variation on hash brown mix as a batter for fried pork.

I have no shame in admitting my love hash browns.

I’m going to have to side with your MIL here, I love mac and cheese from a packet. And the last write had my other favourite, canned rice cream. YUM! Sometimes I mix a bit of cocoa and sugar in it too to make it chocolate canned rice cream.

I know I’m late posting, but have been moving and just now getting back on track… Love violetsblue post! My best (worst!) mac & cheese memory was a cold, rainy backpack trip in the Canadian Rockies. Mom didn’t even bother with Kraft, but some awful generic brand. We traded it to the guys from Switzerland for pear schnaps — great dinner for a 12 yr old!

Also late to comment – no excuse – but the thing I love, when no-one is watching, is the Worcestershire Sauce Sandwich. Must be absolutely fresh white bread, and Holbrooks or Lea and Perrins sauce – definitely not PMU brand. A delight I learnt from my grandmother. I love the tangy, savoury flavour, it makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
